Mascius is a veteran of the 13th Legion, having served throughout the Gallic War presumably in the same Century as Vorenus and Pullo. During much of the second season he is "third man" in Vorenus' collegium.

Personality[]

Brother Mascius of the Aventine Collegium is regarded a funny, temperate, and well rounded character who has befriended Pullo and Vorenus during Ceasar's Gallic wars.

Season One[]

He returns to Rome to inform Magistrate Vorenus that the soldiers want land in Italy and not in some far away province. He is bribed by Vorenus (by order of Caesar) to take Pannonia, an un-provinced land near the border of Germania, 600 miles away from Rome, teeming with “Tuton raiders and Dacian bandits”. After a brief back and forth, Mascius reluctantly accepts the personal bribe of 12,000 denarii and farmland close to Italy.

Season Two[]

He runs the collegium while Pullo and Verenus are away. During this time there is much fighting and violence on an almost daily basis as each mob boss wrestle for full control of the Aventine. When Pullo and Verenus return he is named third man again, much to his displeasement as the believes his contribution to maintaining the collegium during Vorenus and Pullo's absence earned him the right to be second in-charge.

Mascius is gravely wounded by mobsters under Memmio's command whilst transporting a shipment of gold from King Herod intended as a bribe to Marc Antony for political favour. He survives the attack and is brought back to the collegium and treated, where Pullo and Verenus suspect he betrayed the location and contents of the shipment to Memmio and threaten to kill him if he does not confess his betrayal. Mascius reiterates his loyalty before accepting his judgement, but before Pullo kills Mascius, Vorenus stops him after realizing that the real culprit leaking information was his own daughter, providing information to her lover Omnipur, one of Memmio’s goons. Mascius survives and recovers from his wounds, though is left slightly disfigured as a result of his injuries.
